Clean your kitchen thoroughly-The first and most important step is to maintain an immaculately clean kitchen and make sure that any food items on the counter are stored in sealed containers. Even the smallest morsel of food or sticky spot behind the fridge is all that it takes to attract that unwelcome and seemingly endless line of ants. Vinegar is a great household cleaner that’s safe to use around children and pets, and you should always keep a spray bottle in a convenient location.

Eliminate access points-Be sure that you always stay current on yard work to prevent pest infestations. Before ants make their way inside, they will often make hills near your home. Prune all of your shrubs and tree branches that are in direct contact with the home, and seal up cracks around your windows, doors and foundation with caulk to eliminate other potential access points. Be sure to also inspect caulked areas frequently and reseal as needed.

Use baits and traps-If you spot any ant trails, spray them with vinegar and water to disrupt their progress, and then go back and attack any detours or alternate routes they take when they regroup. Bait traps might attract more ants in the short term, but they can help to eliminate the colony itself, if used properly.
