But the best defense is a good offense, and taking a few easy precautions can help you stop ant infestations before they start.

It’s absolutely essential to keep your kitchen clean. “Clean as you go” while cooking, rinse all the leftover food off your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher, and take out the trash every night. Also, regularly clean behind and underneath your appliances and deep-clean your kitchen at least once a week. Baits and traps under the kitchen sink can help you eliminate scout ants before they ever make it to your countertops, and they should be replaced at least every three months for maximum effectiveness,

Your next step is to start thinking like an ant and search for potential access points under the sink. Grab a tube of clear silicone caulk and seal up any visible cracks or openings around pipes and baseboards. And before ants attempt to access the inside of your home, they’ll build ant hills near your foundation or crawl space. Some homeowners have had limited success pouring 2-3 gallons of boiling water over ant hills to eliminate the queen, but this technique only works about half the time. You should also keep in mind that boiling water will also kill nearby grass and vegetation.
