There are over 700 species of ant in the U.S., at least 20 of which are known to be household pests and if you haven’t dealt with them yet here in Arkansas, you will.

So what’s a person to do? Your best bet is to keep them from coming in to start with, and here are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of infestation to start with. Here are a few things you can do to make your home less attractive to ants:

  • Eliminate water sources: Reduce moisture and standing water in and around your home, dry your kitchen counters after washing dishes, fix any leaking pipes and check under sinks regularly.
  • Eliminate Food Sources: In the kitchen, sweep floors to remove food residue and wipe down counters. Store food in sealed containers, keep ripe fruit in the refrigerator, wipe down any sticky jars, and take out the garbage frequently. Also, don’t leave food and water dishes for your pets out. Store pet food in sealed containers and inspect dog and cat doors for signs of ants.
  • Eliminate Accessways: Use window screens and make sure they fit tightly, keep trees and bushes trimmed and away from your home, seal cracks and crevices outside and make sure pipe entrances are sealed tightly.
  • Call a Professional: Failure to properly treat an infestation can lead to more problems, such as causing the ants to spread. If you have an infestation, call The Bug Man, and we’ll have a trained pest control expert track down the nest, eliminate it, and make your home ant-free again.
