Summers in Arkansas can be brutal, and we all look forward to enjoying milder temperatures as the holiday season approaches. This is an excellent time to ensure that your weatherstripping still forms a tight seal around your windows and doors, and to cover your outdoor faucets and plants before our first winter freeze. And even though insects aren’t nearly as active in the fall, you have to protect yourself from them, too!

The Bug Man has offered trusted pest control in Little Rock for over 49 years, and we also proudly serve homeowners in Faulkner, Garland, Jefferson, Saline, and White Counties. We strongly recommend scheduling an annual termite inspection to protect your investment in your home, and we’re just a phone call away if you have an insect infestation or wildlife in your attic or crawl space. There are also several easy things you can do on your own to keep the pests away this winter:

Store your outdoor trash properly—Take out the trash every night to keep cockroaches and ants out of your kitchen, and be sure to keep the lid on your outdoor receptacle closed at all times. And since most municipalities only pick up trash weekly, it’s a good idea to double-bag grease, meat scraps, cat litter, and other smelly garbage to keep rodents and other large pests away.

Eliminate potential habitats—An unkempt yard offers plenty of places for pests to sleep and breed, and once they’re in your yard, it won’t be long before they start attempting to find their way indoors. Be sure to mow your lawn one last time before the first winter frost, and prune all hedges that come into direct contact with your home. And if you can’t safely prune limbs overhanging your roof on your own, there’s no shame in calling a professional tree service!

Inspect your home exterior for water damage—Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a dime, so always be on the lookout for water-damaged wood on your eaves, soffits, and fascia. Replace the damaged wood as soon as possible and repaint it once the repairs are complete to prevent future water damage and keep termites away.
