Every March, as Arkansas soil temperatures climb above 70°F, termite colonies send out swarmers by the thousands. If you've ever seen what appears to be a mass of flying ants near your foundation, windows, or light fixtures in early spring — those are likely termite swarmers, and it's one of the most important warning signs a homeowner can witness.
What Is Swarming?
Subterranean termites — the most common species in our region — produce winged reproductive members called alates. These swarmers emerge from the colony in massive numbers when conditions are right: warm temperatures, high humidity, and typically following a rain event. Their purpose is to find a mate and establish a new colony.
Here's the critical point: swarmers themselves don't damage wood. But their presence is direct evidence that a mature, established colony exists nearby — quite possibly in or under your home.
Why the Window Matters
The window between first swarm and significant structural damage can be surprisingly short. A termite colony producing swarmers has typically been active for 3–5 years and may contain hundreds of thousands of workers actively feeding on wood. Every day without treatment is another day of hidden damage.
What to Look For
- Wings discarded near windows, doors, or light fixtures (swarmers lose their wings almost immediately after finding a mate) - Mud tubes — pencil-width tunnels of mud running along your foundation, piers, or crawlspace walls - Hollow-sounding wood when tapped - Tight-fitting doors or windows (a sign of wood damage and movement) - Any visibly damaged or discolored wood near your foundation
What To Do
Do not disturb any mud tubes or apparent termite activity before having a professional inspection. Disturbing the activity can temporarily drive termites deeper, making assessment more difficult.
Call The Bug Man Inc. for a thorough inspection. Our Purdue University trained technicians know exactly where to look and how to assess the scope of any activity. If termites are present, we'll recommend the most effective treatment — including our Termidor® Certified Professional treatments, which are among the most effective products available anywhere.
The Bottom Line
Spring in Arkansas is beautiful — don't let termites take the shine off it. An annual inspection is the single most cost-effective step you can take to protect your home from these destructive insects.
