Winter is a great time of year to take a look around your attic and make sure that your insulation is still in good shape. Properly installed insulation doesn’t usually need to be replaced, unless it’s been damaged by smoke, fire, or water. But over time, settling can occur, leading to reduced effectiveness.

If you need to replace or upgrade your household insulation, Thermal, Acoustical, Pest Control (TAP) Insulation is a great investment. TAP is a boric acid insulation product that not only outperforms conventional insulation in terms of lowering energy costs, but it is also very effective at killing bugs.

TAP insulation is made from more than 85 percent recycled paper and includes a naturally-occurring, borate-based pest control additive. In addition to insulating your home and killing household pests, TAP insulation also leaves no post-installation waste, and reduces the size of your home’s carbon footprint. TAP is the only Energy Star labeled pest control application in the industry, and has also met the EPA’s most rigorous safety standards. TAP insulation also will not burn so in case of a fire, the TAP insulation will not accelerate the fire. When properly installed, TAP insulation can be used with a reasonable certainty of no harm to human health, and no unreasonable environmental risks.

TAP is a “loose-fill” insulation that is blown into attics. It can be installed as the sole insulation for attics for newly constructed homes,or added on top of the insulation that you already have in place. TAP Insulation is infused with boric acid, which serves as the product’s pest control agent. The acid attaches itself to the bodies of household pests that crawl through the insulation, and is ingested as the pests groom themselves. The insects eat the boric acid, and not the insulation, and the poison is particularly effective because the insects cannot develop a tolerance.

Once the insulation is installed and left undisturbed, it will be effective for as long as you own your home. And the good news is that even as the insulation settles over time, the product will still provide effective thermal retention.

TAP insulation does everything that conventional insulation can do, plus a whole lot more. Once installed, you can expect year-round energy savings, and an immediate decrease in cockroach and silverfish activity.
